Tempe Police to Participate in Crack Down on Seat Belt/Child Seat Use

The Tempe Police Department working in cooperation with the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety will be participating in Seat Belt/Child Seat enforcement in conjunction with national Child Passenger Safety Week, September 19th -31st. 2009 and Click it or Ticket campaigns.

We will be stepping up enforcement patrols through the end of September in an attempt to increase seatbelt usage, increase the proper usage of child seats, and ultimately reduce the number of injuries and deaths from motor vehicle collisions.

It should be noted that motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for children age 3 to 6 and 8 to 14. In 2007, 6,532 passenger vehicle occupants 14 and younger were involved in fatal crashes.  Also, when worn correctly, seatbelts have proven to reduce the risk of fatal injury to front seat passenger car occupants by 45 percent.  Regular seat belt use is the single most effective way to protect people and reduce fatalities in motor vehicle crashes.  Remember to buckle up Arizona.

Thank you for getting this important safety message out the public.  For additional information please contact Sgt. Dale Hoobler at 480-858-6287.
