Permit Process

Depending upon the nature of the signage, processing a sign permit can take from a few days to as long as 45 to 60 days. Therefore, an applicant will want to begin the permit process as early as possible.

Special circumstances may require relief from the terms of the sign regulations in the Zoning and Development Code. Relief may be sought through the Hearing Officer/Board of Adjustment. Both are empowered to grant variances under special circumstances.

Conclusion

The City of Tempe has become one of the most pleasant urban places to spend time in the Valley of the Sun, whether it be walking in Kiwanis Park, shopping on one of the many varied commercial centers, or spending an evening in the rejuvenated downtown.

Part of the reason for this pleasant environment is the ongoing application of strongly supported development standards and the attention to detail. The Tempe Sign Program is representative of the City Council’s overall commitment to quality in a multitude of programs throughout the city.

Note: The 1999 Citizen Survey revealed an 86% approval rating for the Tempe Sign Program.
