Redden Park
Redfield Dr. & Lakeshore Dr.
4 acres
Redden Park
was originally part of the Hallcraft Home subdivision.
Built in 1974 in partnership with Hallcraft, the park
was named after Tempe pioneers, the Redden Family.
Mr. and Mrs. James
Redden came to Tempe by covered wagon in 1888 from
northern California with their eight children. They
established a homestead and farmed 310 acres on south
McClintock at approximately Carver Road. Mr. Redden was
an avid apiarist and was director of the Salt River
Valley Honey Producers Association.
After retiring, James
and his wife moved back to California, but their five
sons, Byron, Lowell, Mark, Walter and Homer remained
active farmers in Tempe. Byron was quite active in the
community. He was employed by the Tempe Canal Company
until it was taken over with the formation of the Salt
River Water Users Association and later served as a
member of the Tempe Union High School District Board.
He was also an active Shriner, member of the Odd Fellows
and other civic groups and organizations.
The Redden’s have quite
a legacy in Tempe and while the original pioneers
returned to California, their children have left a
lasting impression on Tempe and a 4-acre park will serve
as a lasting tribute to their community involvement.
