Palmer Park
College Ave. & Carson Dr.
4.5 acres
Built in 1967,
Palmer Park was named in honor Tempe’s first parks and
recreation director, Vic Palmer. Vic came to Tempe from
Elkhart, Indiana for health reasons in 1953. While in
Elkhart, Mr. Palmer served as athletic director for the
local YMCA and on the board of directors for the local
parks and recreation department.
Upon arrival in
Tempe in 1953, Vic began working for the Tempe Chamber
of Commerce who at the time oversaw operations of Tempe
Beach Park and Pool. Prior to the creation of the parks
and recreation department, the Chamber ran many of the
programs and facilities for the City. Vic served as
manager for the Chamber until City Manager Art Bunger
hired him to lead the newly established Parks and
Recreation Department in 1958. While the City
previously had an extensive summer recreation program,
1958 gave rise to the new department.
During his
tenure as director, 1958-1963, Vic oversaw the
acquisition into the City of Double Butte Cemetery, the
development of the City’s first municipal golf course in
Papago Park (Rolling Hills) and guided the development
of numerous programs and activities within the schools
throughout Tempe.
Born
in Chicago, Illinois in January, 1904 Vic’s life was
centered around sports and recreation. We owe a great
deal of gratitude for the solid foundation laid by Vic
Palmer for the citizens of Tempe. Through his vision
and leadership, development of parks, golf and
recreation programs flourished in Tempe for youth and
adults. His legacy is alive and well in Palmer Park and
shall serve as a reminder for many generations to come.
