Nike Reuse-A-Shoe Program
The city of
Tempe is
partnering with Arizona State University (ASU) and Nike, Inc. to collect 5,000
pairs of shoes and recycle them into sports surfaces as part of the Nike
Reuse-A-Shoe Program. All brands of athletic shoes as well as byproducts from
the manufacturing of outsoles, are collected and recycled into a material that's
used in sports surfaces like soccer and football fields, basketball and tennis
courts and tracks. Nike then donates
these types of surfaces to communities participating in the program as part of
their commitment to get kids moving, to regenerate excitement around recycling
and divert waste from landfills. The city
hopes to collect enough shoes to be able to put a sports surface here in Tempe
at a site yet to be determined.
