Nike Reuse-A-Shoe Program

The city of Tempe  is partnering with Arizona State University (ASU) and Nike, Inc. to collect 5,000 pairs of shoes and recycle them into sports surfaces as part of the Nike Reuse-A-Shoe Program. All brands of athletic shoes as well as byproducts from the manufacturing of outsoles, are collected and recycled into a material that's used in sports surfaces like soccer and football fields, basketball and tennis courts and tracks.  Nike then donates these types of surfaces to communities participating in the program as part of their commitment to get kids moving, to regenerate excitement around recycling and divert waste from landfills.  The city hopes to collect enough shoes to be able to put a sports surface here in Tempe at a site yet to be determined.

There are nine Tempe locations where residents can drop off shoes:

ASU Student Recreation Center, 400 E. Apache Boulevard
Arc Thrift Store, 201 W Southern Avenue, Suite 39
Performance Footwear, 725 South Rural Road
University Presbyterian Church, 139 East Alameda Drive

Westside Multigenerational Center, 715 West 5th Street

The recycling bins are located outside at the following locations:
Kiwanis Recreation Center
6111 South All-America Way
Tempe Public Library Complex - parking lot between Pyle Adult Recreation Center
and the Tempe Historical Museum 3500 South Rural Road
Tempe South Police Substation 8201 S. Hardy Drive
