In 1940, unit 208 of this duplex (208-210 E. 7th Street) was occupied by Ethel F. Kemp.
In 1946 unit 208 was vacant. In 1948 unit 208 was occupied by William J. Bundy. Dorothy
Schilling occupied unit 210 from 1940 to 1948. This property is located in the Birchett
Tract, which was subdivided from the original block 14 in Tempe in March of 1940 by Joseph
T. Birchett and Guess E. Birchett; the older houses here date from the original
subdivision.
This building is a good example of early Ranch style architecture. It remains
relatively intact with only modern aluminum screen doors added. The diamond-shaped
asbestos tiles are rarely seen today except as remnants on historic buildings. The raised
floor level and stucco (rather than painted brick) are characteristic of details found on
earlier bungalows. This building is the only intact duplex found on 7th Street east of
Mill Avenue.
