Adobe Bungalow at 600 West Fifth Street

Survey Number: HPS-136
Name: Adobe Bungalow
Location: 600 W. 5th Street
Year Built: c.1920
Architectural Style: Bungalow

This property was constructed in the state plat section of Tempe. Each section 16 in every township in the United States was reserved for school use after 1787; the land was owned by the states after statehood was achieved. Section 16 in Tempe was subdivided in parts starting in the early twenties after it became apparent that the land was not needed for school purposes. Its sale provided income to the state. This property was owned by Clifford Swinford in 1946-47.

This house represents a modest example of the Bungalow style with simplified details such as wood porch posts atop stuccoed bases. The grassy lawn upon which this house sits is typical for properties of this era. The massing of the roof is an important character-defining element of its style.
