Tempe's Historic Districts
A recently
completed update of the Tempe Historic Property Survey recommends that three unique groups
of buildings be designated as historic districts:
- The Gage Addition Historic District
The Gage Addition is an area just west of the ASU campus which includes the Maple-Ash
neighborhood. It is one of the best preserved and oldest neighborhoods in Tempe, and could
qualify as an historic district. It includes homes that were built in the early 1900s,
along with newer houses dating to the 1940s and '50s.
- The Arizona State University Historic District
The variety of buildings on the ASU campus represent more than a hundred years of history
and architecture.
- The Route 89 Multiple Property Nomination
More than a dozen buildings along East Apache Boulevard represent the emergence of
tourism-related businesses between Mesa and Tempe in the 1940s and '50s. These classic
roadside motels and service stations are spread out over a stretch of several miles, so
they do not form a typical "district" of closely grouped buildings.
Below are lists of some of the buildings in these proposed historic districts, with
links to more detailed descriptions from the Tempe Historic Property Survey.
