Centennial Events
To
celebrate the state centennial, the Tempe History Museum is hosting several
events between February and May to bring residents back through time and learn the history of our
great state. Bring your families and enjoy a variety of events! You’ll learn
a thing or two about history and be a part of Arizona’s big birthday.
Tempe Historical Society Lunch Talks: Tempe since
Arizona’s Statehood

The Tempe Historical Society Lunch Talks, which began in October, have
featured various speakers commemorating Arizona’s Centennial. The series
will resume in January with new monthly lectures focusing on the development
and transformation of the city of Tempe. Bring your lunch and enjoy these
exciting upcoming speakers:
- Wednesday, Feb. 8: Rob Spindler, Arizona State University archivist
- Wednesday, March 14: Mary Ann Kwilosz, Tempe Historical Society
- Wednesday, April 11: Harry Mitchell, former mayor of Tempe

Centennial Children’s Essay Contest Awards Ceremony

Saturday, Feb. 11, 10 a.m.
To commemorate the Arizona Centennial, Tempe Elementary School District is
coordinating an essay contest open to students in all Tempe elementary
schools. Students in grades 4-8 are encouraged to write an essay based on
the topic of Arizona’s centennial. Awards will be selected in two categories
(grades 4-5 and grades 6-8) by a panel of teachers from the Tempe Elementary
School District.
The public is invited to attend the ceremony at the Tempe History Museum on
Saturday, Feb. 11 where selected students will receive their awards.
If your child is interested in participating, please contact their Tempe
Elementary School District teacher.
Tales
from Double Butte
Tempe Double Butte Cemetery, 2505 W. Broadway Rd.

To commemorate Arizona’s Centennial and celebrate the history of Tempe’s
most prominent residents, the second Tales from Double Butte tour of Tempe
Double Butte Cemetery, 2505 W. Broadway Road, will be held on Sunday, March
4 at 2 p.m.
Tickets will be on sale the beginning of February. Proceeds will benefit the
Tempe History Museum and Tempe Double Butte Cemetery. For more information,

Centennial Saturday Performance at the Museum: Animals and a Wind Ensemble

Celebrate Arizona’s birthday with a family-friendly concert! The Tempe
History Museum and Classical Revolution PHX presents the Siroccan Winds in a
musical event for children and their families. Discover the unique sound of
timbres made by the instruments of a woodwind quintet, applied to
animal-themed tunes. Siroccan Winds features Maureen Baker on flute,
Torrence Welch on oboe, Daniel Coombs on clarinet, Ben Yingst on bassoon,
and Donald Harvey on French horn. This program was supported with funds
granted by the Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records Agency
under the Library Services and Technology Act, which is administered by the
Institute of Museum and Library Services.
Performances at the Museum: A Centennial Composition Competition

Saturday, May 5, 7 p.m.
To honor Arizona’s centennial, Classical Revolution PHX presents a
composition competition premiering five new pieces of music inspired by
Arizona and written by composers from Arizona. All works will be performed
live and judged by an expert panel and the audience. Winner and runners-up
will be announced. Join us to hear these world-premiere works and enjoy a
fun and entertaining presentation to celebrate Arizona’s 100 years.
