BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Robert H. Hilgeman made major contributions to horticultural research on citrus and date farming in Arizona. He graduated from the University of Arizona in 1928. About 1930 he started working as a research assistant at the University of Arizona Date Farm at Rural and Baseline roads, near Tempe. He served as director of research, 1935-1941. Hilgeman continued post-graduate studies in agriculure at UCLA, earning a Master's degree in 1942, and a Ph.D. in 1951. In 1948, Hilgeman became the first superintendant of the University of Arizona's Salt River Valley Citrus Experiment Station on Priest Drive near Tempe. He was superintendant until 1971.
COLLECTION DESCRIPTION:
This collection contains photographs of the Hilgeman family, the two University of Arizona Experimental Farms, including views of equipment, facilities, and date palm and citrus tree specimens, and other images relating to Tempe. Related archival materials include typed manuscripts, published reports and articles, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, field notebooks, charts, map, and figuring book. The reports and manuscripts deal primarily with the cultivation, pollenization, irrigation, and harvesting of citrus and date trees; climatology and soil chemistry; the history of citrus and date farming in Arizona; and information on local growers producing these fruits.
