SCOPE: 31 scrapbooks and 2 binders documenting the activities,
participants, and history of the Tempe Garden Club.
CONTENT: Scrapbooks: 1936-1987; binders: 1958-1970.
COLLECTION DESCRIPTION: The Tempe Garden Club, organized by Mrs. R. J. Hight and
Mrs. George Gibson, began in 1936. This organization promoted gardening,
participated in and held flower shows, conducted beautification/landscaping
projects around Tempe and the Valley, and was active in conservation issues.
These scrap books include newspaper clippings, typed and hand-written
manuscripts, pamphlets and programs, letters, newsletters, bulletins,
photographs, cut-out pictures, certificates and ribbons, drawings, stamps and
other ephemera. These archival objects document activities and
participants in the club, as well as give information on gardening, plants, and
birds. Some of the scrapbooks contain ephemera related to World War II
"Victory Gardens", as well as the Cook Training School. The
binders include meeting minutes, membership lists, officer reports, letters, and
pamphlets. One binder contains ephemera related to the conservation group,
"Arizonans for Billboard Control."
