SCOPE: Photographs relating to the Tempe Historic Property Survey of resources of pre-1934 vintage located within the city limits of Tempe.

CONTENT: Photographs, circa 1930, circa 1980 to 1983

COLLECTION DESCRIPTION: The collection originated with the Tempe Historical Society about 1980. Included in the collection are all of the original photographs taken during Phase 1. Photographs were taken of historical resources such as buildings, bridges, and businesses dated pre-1934 within the city limits of Tempe. Other work done during the project was field investigation, newspaper indexing, title research, interviewing, historic photocopying and searches of the Tempe Historical Museum collections. One of the goals of the project was to select from the 350 photographs taken and compiled in Phase I and to document those buildings,site and objects within the present city limits eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic places during Phase 2. During Phase 2, a research inventory of 150 resources was selected from the original 350 photographs. Phase 2 was conducted from mid May through December of 1982.

One reason for the project was that "historic buildings may be important examples of outstanding architectural style, period, or method of construction; for their associations with people or events that are significant to the history of Tempe; or by representing the cultural development of the area." The Tempe Historical Society coordinated research efforts of the volunteers, Susan Wilcox of the Tempe Historical Museum was the volunteer coordinator, and the professional consultation was provided by Janus Associates, Inc., an architectural firm in Tempe.
