This building was constructed as a dormitory for women students in 1936. Its construction was backed by a Public Works Administration loan. It is associated with Federal public works programs on campus. It is named for its location.

West Hall is architecturally significant as one of the last of the Revivalist styles used for campus buildings. Compare the classical style of West Hall in 1936 to the Art Moderne style and Wrightian style buildings constructed on campus in 1937 and 1939. In 1941 another dormitory, Dixie Gammage Hall was built immediately west of and connectetd to West Hall. It was built in a simplified classical style reminiscent of West Hall. Furthermore, West Hall is the work of the locally significant architectural firm of Lescher & Mahoney.
