The original Kyrene School was built on the northwest corner of McClintock and Warner
in 1888. Buildings were added in 1914 and 1916. The school was moved to 8700 S. Kyrene
Road in 1920, and four one-room buildings were added. The original building was then used
as an assembly room and for community meetings. The school served the rural area southeast
of Tempe for many years. Remodeling and more additions occurred in 1957.
The Kyrene School was composed of three connected buildings constructed of frame and
stucco, with lath roof and board overhangs. The north and south buildings were square with
square lattice vents between a wood frieze and the roof. The central building had a lower
roof and no vents. A low concrete water table surrounded the building. Original
double-hung windows with concrete sills were in groups of five on the west (front) facade
of the central building. Many windows had been altered or infilled. Entries were at the
front facade and are single leaf doors. The rear of the complex had a freight door
installed in the center portion and a flat awning for cars attached to the north building.
