This house was built for Sara Melissa Johnson, the fifth wife of Mormon patriach
Benjamin F. Johnson, who settled in Tempe in 1882 with four of his six wives. He divided
his 80-acre property into smaller parcels, giving land to each wife's family. Originally
it was a two-room adobe house, measuring 30 feet by 30 feet, with a hipped roof and
10-foot deep porches on the front and rear. A separate frame addition was built in 1927.
The house was set back far from the street, reflecting the agriculturally-oriented
subdivision of blocks traditional to Mormon settlements. The House was demolished in 1983.
