Requirements for Tempe Junior History Detective Program

Please note that you must be registered with the Tempe Junior History Detective Program and must have your passbook initialed by a museum staff person for each activity you complete before you can be certified as an official Tempe Junior History Sleuth, Investigator or Detective!

To receive your final promotion and be recognized as a Junior History Detective, you must have completed nine activities (3 per rank).  Include at least one each of the following in your nine activities:

  • scavenger hunt
  • museum site visit
  • writing in your own words
  • family tree

Junior Sleuth Rank

Choose three (3) of the following activities for promotion:

  1. Complete What Color Am I? scavenger hunt (available at front desk).
  2. Attend a special event, such as Holiday Fantasia, Awesome Autumn Adventure, Spring Sensation, or Wild Wednesday. (Check our events page for details on upcoming events.)
  3. Complete Things from Long Ago seek & find scavenger hunt (available at front desk).
  4. Draw a picture showing yourself if you had lived in the pioneer days.

Junior Investigator Rank

 Complete three (3) of the following activities for promotion:

  1. Visit the Petersen House Museum, 1414 W. Southern Avenue, Tempe, AZ and take a photo of yourself standing outside the Petersen House.
  2. Complete a Laird and Dines video scavenger hunt (available at front desk).
  3. Pick a historic public property from the Tempe Historic Property Survey. Take a picture of you at the property, and bring it in for credit. /museum/ahpsfile.htm.
  4. Pick a picture from our on-line photo archives and write a fictional story about it.  One half page minimum, with parents’ help. /Tempe_history/oslist.htm.

Junior Detective Rank

Choose three (3) of the following activities for promotion:

  1.  Research and create your three-generation family tree, including dates and places of birth, death, and marriage.

  2. View the photos from Tempe’s Double Butte Cemetery, then go and take a picture of yourself at one of those sites. See Double_Butte_Cemetery.pdf for photos.  See http://www.tempe.gov/cemetery/pdf/Cemetery%20Map_%20Broad%20View.pdf  for map.

  3. Draw a picture of yourself visiting the museum.

  4. Create your own seek and find scavenger hunt for the museum. It should include at least four items.
