About the Library : Renovation Project

Big changes are happening!

A 15-month interior renovation project is in progress at Tempe Public Library.  This is the first ever overhaul to the 20-year-old building - that will transform the facility into an even better environment for learning and community interaction.

The vision is to create an extraordinary Library that will delight and amaze users of all ages and interests.  Here are a few answers to Library users' questions and concerns about renovation-related conditions and events.

  • Being Quiet in the Library
It's true; the Library will be very crowded during construction and the kind of quiet study area we all sometimes need will simply not be possible for a while.  This is only temporary.  When the renovation is finished, we will have an enclosed Quiet Reading Room.  Click here to see.

  • Where did all those kids come from?
They have been here all along, and we're glad.  The Youth Library is the first area to be renovated and that area is closed to the public during this phase of construction.  Youth Services is temporarily housed on the main level.  When this first phase of the renovation is completed, children and teens will have their own, much larger area on the lower level.  Click here to see.

  • Computers

  • Study Rooms
Study Rooms will be unavailable during parts of the current renovation project.  Please be patient while the contractor builds new ones in our future Computer Commons area.  Click here to see.

  • Library Programs and Classes
Due to temporary space limitations during construction and renovation of the library facility, the number of classes and other public programs we offer will be extremely limited.  Please check the Tempe Opportunities Brochure for class offerings at other locations in the City.

  • Back Issues of Newspapers and Magazines
During parts of the current renovation project, our collection of back issues of newspapers on microfilm/microfiche will be in storage off-site. You can still access many of them online.  Back issues of magazines and some recent back issues of newspapers are available on shelves on the Library's main floor.
