Application and Hiring Process

  • Applications are accepted for currently open positions only. 
     

  • A list of current jobs available and their recruitment bulletins may be viewed at www.tempe.gov/jobs .
     

  • The recruitment bulletin contains general information regarding the position such as salary, minimum qualifications, what documents/forms are needed in order to apply and where to apply.  Please read the job bulletin carefully - submittal requirements may vary.
     

  • Resumes will not be accepted in lieu of official applications or supplemental questionnaires.  See the recruitment bulletin for information on how to apply.
     

  • The City of Tempe is not responsible for failure by the user to follow directions and provide the correct documents for a position.
     

  • We must receive any documents required no later than 5:00 p.m. on the Closing Date (postmarks are not acceptable).  The City is not responsible for lost or delayed mail.
     

  • Application submittals can be made to the City of Tempe, Human Resources, 20 E 6th Street, Tempe, AZ 85281 in one of the following ways:

    • By Mail

    • Walk In - between the hours of 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday thru Friday, excluding holidays

    • 24-Hour Drop Box - located outside the Human Resources office on 6th Street.  Applications must be in the drop box no later than 5:00 p.m. on the stated closing date.
       

  • Once the position closes, we will send you a postcard that clearly states we have received your application.
     

  • All applications are reviewed and the most qualified applicants are invited to continue in the next process.
     

  • An eligible candidate not selected may remain on our list and be certified to other vacancies as they occur.  An eligibility list is valid for a minimum of six months.
     

  • Pre-employment requirement may include: a City paid physical exam by a City designated physician based upon job-related physical standards; fingerprints; drug screening; a thorough background check; and verification of identity and work authorization.  Some positions may also require a psychological evaluation and polygraph test. 
     

  •  A probationary period is 6 or 12 months depending on position.
