SUMMARY: Under general supervision, oversees skilled employees involved in the daily maintenance, inspection, alteration, repair and/or replacement of equipment and machinery of a water or wastewater treatment plant. Oversees and participates in the repair of equipment and preventative maintenance programs, plans work assignments and inspects ongoing and completed maintenance work. Monitors the technical performance of the facility and makes any necessary adjustments to ensure that all requirements of the various State and Federal regulatory agencies are met.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    _ Supervises personnel involved in the maintenance, inspection, alteration, repair and/or replacement of equipment and machinery in the wastewater treatment plant;

    _ Confers with electricians and mechanics or other plant operations personnel to coordinate planned installation, repair, and preventive maintenance work;

    _ Reviews progress of projects and work assignments with assigned personnel, assists them in organizing resources, and mentors, coaches, and evaluates their performance;

    _ Investigates equipment failures to determine causes and takes necessary corrective steps;

    _ Assists engineering with on various projects related to facilities and storm lift station and development and upgrades;

    _ Prepares reports and recommendations on work progress and proposed changes to maintenance operations;

    _ Supervises safety activities and participates in the safety program for the maintenance section including applying and monitoring improved work procedures to ensure safety and efficiency of operations;

    _ Resolves routine problems encountered of subordinate personnel performance of work assignments;

    _ Performs other related duties as assigned.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:

    Knowledge of:

    _ City, State and Federal rules and regulations governing the treatment of water and discharge of wastewater;

    _ Supervisory methods and practices;

    _ occupational hazards and safety precautions pertaining to all phases of maintenance in a water or wastewater treatment plant utilizing mechanical and electrical equipment;

    _ practices, methods, materials, and tools used in the repair and preventive maintenance of mechanical, electrical and instrumentation equipment used in a water or wastewater treatment plant.

    Skill in:

    _ operating and maintaining of engines, pumps, conveyors, blowers, compressors, valves, chlorinators, and other equipment normally found in a complex water and wastewater treatment plant;

    _ working safely without presenting a direct threat to the incumbent or others;

    _ working with chemicals or similar solutions using only normal protective equipment;

    _ working cooperatively with other City employees, various levels of City and Departmental staff, and the public.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: Vision is required to perform and monitor essential functions, and to complete data entry. Work is performed in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to outdoor elements, rough or uneven surfaces, cleaning fluids, effluent, paints, cleaning agents, and chemicals using only normal protective gear. There is need to stand, stoop, walk, and lift heavy objects (over 50 pounds) during the course of the workday.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High School or G.E.D., and three (3) years' experience in mechanical maintenance and repair work including one (1) year in a lead or supervisory capacity over skilled mechanics, machinists, plumbers, and electricians; or any equivalent combination of experience and additional education and training that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform this work. Must possess appropriate level of valid Arizona Commercial Driver's License.

    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT: An employee in this class is required to live within fifteen (15) miles of the City limits, and within the United States.
