SUMMARY: Under direct supervision, performs diagnostic and mechanical repair and preventive maintenance of a diversified light to medium equipment fleet. Performs the actual repair, service, or maintenance work, and any final tests or checks to determine that the work has been completed satisfactorily.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    _ Performs preventive maintenance and service on a diverse fleet of light and medium duty equipment , vehicles, and machinery;

    _ Performs major overhaul on electrical systems, engines, transmissions, differentials and hydraulics for light to medium types of equipment;

    _ Completes records on vehicle maintenance such as date work performed, description of corrective repairs, time spent on repair, parts and materials used, and class and cause of repair;

    _ Drives vehicles to locate defects and as a final performance check upon completion of repairs;

    _ Performs road calls and field service to units broken down;

    _ Performs light welding and machine work incidental to completion of repair assignments;

    _ Ensures proper follow-through on reportable accidents to protect employee and City interests;

    _ Prepares comprehensive reports of mechanical maintenance activities and costs;

    _ Performs other related duties as assigned.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:

    Knowledge of:

    _ automotive shop safety, maintenance repair, and adjustment of a variety of conventional and specialized heavy equipment and machinery including hydraulics;

    _ automotive tools and equipment used in repair servicing and maintenance of heavy equipment;

    _ automotive testing equipment to diagnose defects in motors and bodies of heavy equipment and machinery;

    _ equipment costs, record keeping, trades techniques, materials and practices of trades which are related to automotive and mechanical repair work.

    Skill in:

    _ inspecting any worn, defective, or improperly adjusted auto parts;

    _ diagnosing the necessary procedures and parts required to complete repairs;

    _ keeping records of repair and service operations, and to complete reports;

    _ performing inspections of completed repairs to ensure through repair and suitability of vehicle for return to service.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed in office and automotive repair shop environments with occasional exposure to the outdoor elements. Vision is required to perform and monitor essential functions, and to complete data entry. There is need to stand, stoop, walk and lift heavy objects (over 50 pounds) during the course of the workday. Requires the use of a vehicle on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A High School Degree or G.E.D., and three (3) years' experience in the maintenance and repair of automotive and mechanical equipment; or any equivalent combination of experience and additional education and training that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform this work. Must have own hand tools. Must obtain a valid Arizona Commercial Driver's License within 6 months of appointment to position.

    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT: An employee in this class is required to live within fifteen (15) miles of the City limits, and within the United States.
