Tempe sets Special Election for General Plan 2040

Tempe, Arizona – The City Council has set a May 20 Special Election to ask Tempe voters to ratify General Plan 2040.
As required by state law, cities must update their General Plans every 10 years and get voter approval. All General Plan documents reflect a community’s vision for where it wants to go in the future; the documents are less specific than a given city’s zoning and development code.
Tempe residents and other community members, such as property and business owners, have worked for more than a year at public meetings to update the city’s General Plan 2030 to become General Plan 2040. The City Council adopted General Plan 2040 at its Dec. 12 meeting, and set the election date through a formal vote at its Jan. 9 Regular Meeting.
Arguments supporting or opposing General Plan 2040 that are to be published in the publicity pamphlet must be filed by Feb. 19 in the City Clerk’s Office. Each argument must be 300 words or less and must include the original, notarized signature of the person sponsoring it. If sponsored by an organization, the original, notarized signatures of two executive officers are required. If sponsored by a political committee, the original, notarized signature of the committee’s chair or treasurer is required. Those signing must identify themselves by giving their residential or post office addresses and telephone numbers, which will not be published in the pamphlet. Each argument costs $100 to file, in order to offset printing costs.
The deadline for voter registration is April 21. Early voting details will be announced soon.
