TEMPE, Ariz. – To celebrate Earth Day, the City of Tempe joined students at Arredondo Elementary School in planting a new tree on their playground this morning.

The entire student body gathered to watch as students from the school’s running club grabbed shovels and planted the tree in its new home on the playground. The tree was donated to the school on behalf of the Trees for Tempe program in recognition of Arredondo Elementary School’s 40th Anniversary and Tempe’s 4th Annual Arbor Day 5K.

Because April is National Safe Digging Month, Arizona Blue Stake came out to the school and marked an appropriate area for the tree to be planted. This ensured that the hole was dug in a spot that was safe and kept the tree from hitting any lines.

More than 30 students from the school’s running club will be participating in the Arbor Day 5K this Friday at Giuliano Park. The club, which includes students from Kindergarten-5th Grade, was started by Arredondo Principal Alison Bruening-Hamati, to keep her kids active and involved during out-of-school hours.

The community is invited to join the students and participate in the Arbor Day 5K at Giuliano Park this Friday, April 26. Activities will include an event expo, beginning at 4 p.m., a free Kids Dash for children 10 and under, beginning at 6 p.m., and the 5K main event at 6:15 p.m.

The Arbor Day 5K, presented by SRP Earthwise, is the main fundraiser for the Trees for Tempe program, which helps revitalize Tempe’s urban forest.
