Tempe Police Department Arrest Home Invasion Suspects

On Thursday August 30, 2012 at approximately 5:41 pm Tempe Police were called to the area of 1300 block of East University in Tempe for a robbery that just occurred. The victim reported to responding officers that he was at his apartment in the 1300 block of East Orange in Tempe when suspects, later identified as Garret Austin Jors DOB 06-21-1994 and Burtron Smith 06-22-1992 knocked on his door.

The victim, who was expecting a roofing repair company at his residence, opened the door when the suspects knocked. Jors and Burtron quickly entered pushing past the victim. Jors and Burtron assaulted the victim by striking and shoving the victim onto the floor. The suspects gathered items from the residence before forcing the victim to leave with them, and walk to a local convenience store to withdraw money from an ATM.

After being forced to withdraw money from his bank account, Jors and Burtron released the victim and walked away westbound from the store. No weapons had been used in this incident. The victim immediately went back into the store and notified the store clerk. Officer’s responded to the area actively searching for the suspects.

Jors and Burtron were later seen walking in the area, by responding officers who were provided with additional information on the suspect’s descriptions by the store clerk. The suspects were contacted in the area of University and McClintock. Jors and Burtron were later identified by the victim, and placed under arrest. Investigators at the scene obtained evidence of the crime (cash) from the suspects.

Both Jors and Burtron were transported to the Tempe City Jail and booked for aggravated assault, kidnapping, burglary, threats and strong arm robbery. The suspects confessed to their actions in committing this crime, and also admitted to watching the victim walk home prior to the incident. The suspects indicated that they chose the victim, because he looked like he would be an easy target. The Tempe Police Department would like to remind the public to always be aware of your surroundings and report any suspicious activity.
