Tempe Police detectives have arrested 27-year old Douglas Ray George for the murder of 23 year old Annovedwin Begay-Barakzai (see attached previously released victim sketch).

Investigation revealed that after killing the victim at another location, Douglas Ray George drove her to the 1900 block of East Minton Drive, and placed her body in a dark area of the neighborhood. A passerby called police at approximately 4:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 15 to report discovery of the victim. The investigation was made even more complicated due to the fact that she had no identification and was left unclothed. The cause of death was determined by the Medical Examiner to be blunt force trauma.

In addition to leads and tips pursued by our Detectives, we have been working hard to keep the sketch of the victim at the forefront of media newscasts on a daily basis in the hopes that someone would recognize this young woman. With the assistance of the public we did receive information that helped us identify Annovedwin Begay-Barakzai.

Douglas Ray George and the victim lived together in the 900 block of East Baseline Road. George had been arrested by our officers for Domestic Violence assault on the victim earlier this month. Detectives have determined that facts and evidence connect Douglas Ray George to the homicide, and he is currently being booked into the Tempe City jail on the charge of Second Degree Murder.
