On Saturday, May 11, 2013 Paul Gardener and Chad Leakey were arrested for burglary from vehicle after they attempted to break into an unmarked police vehicle which was occupied by two uniformed police officers in the area of Baseline Road and Butte. Gardener opened the rear passenger door and attempted to get inside the vehicle until he realized the back seat was a cage and a police vehicle. Both Gardener and Leakey attempted to flee on foot, but were quickly apprehended by the police officers.

Interviews of both suspects and items found on their person linked them to one other vehicle burglary and two other attempted burglaries from vehicle in the area. Gardener also had a small baggie of methamphetamine on his person when arrested and Leakey had a backpack with several pieces of mail that he had stolen earlier in the day. Both Paul Gardener and Chad Leakey were booked into the Maricopa County Jail for 1 count of burglary and three counts of attempted burglary. Paul Gardener was also charged with being in possession of a dangerous drug. The US Postal Service was notified and is investigating the mail theft.
