Three performers were selected from more than 200 singer/songwriters who have participated in the city’s weekly Walk-in Wednesdays Open Mic Night series. Billy Cioffi and TR Hummer provided excerpts from "The AmeriCamera Project" as the event headliners. The AmeriCamera show earned a Bronze Telly Award and an Emmy® nomination from the Rocky Mountain Southwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
Jason Messer stands out among the wealth of singer-songwriters in the Tempe music scene. His blend of guitar mastery, introspective lyrics and warm baritone engage and entertain; his wide smile invites listeners to come closer. Jason draws inspiration from musicians who put songwriting at the forefront. Among them are Neil Young, The Doors and Radiohead. His musicianship is as eclectic as his influences, shifting from three-chord songs to layers of rhythms and harmonies employing loop pedals. Messer is a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, and moved to Arizona in 1998, drawn by memories of childhood trips and other inexplicable forces. Alisse Garn is an Arizona native and is currently a senior at Mesa High School. She was inspired by her older brother’s passion for musical creativity and began to sing, play the piano and guitar and put her musings to music just a few short years ago. Twice this year was invited to showcase her music at the Durango Songwriter’s Expo held in Santa Ynez, Calif., and Bloomfield, Colo. In February, she placed second among more than 200 singer/songwriters (a number of them professional veterans of the art) with her song: “Piece by Piece.” Alisse has a unique way of expressing herself on canvas, guitars and anything else that needs a dose of her happy zing. When she is not engaged in writing and painting, she might be longboarding, hiking or chilling with friends around a campfire (singing, of course). Jeremy Clayton was born in South Carolina and was introduced to music at age seven. After years of piano lessons with two separate teachers he gave up on learning to read music and started writing it. In high school he played in churches and cover bands, but it was not until the age of 22 that he had his first chance to truly debut as a songwriter with The Ivy Street Band. The band, based out of Oregon, released its first album in 2007 and its second in fall of 2010. In May of 2010 Clayton moved to Phoenix, where he is currently raising funds for a solo debut album.
