Float Test - Rowing Classes Only (NOT Kayak or SUP)
All rowing participants must complete a 10-minute float test and watch a U.S. Rowing Safety Video (does not include stand-up paddleboard or kayaking classes). If you have rowing experience but are new to the City of Tempe Rowing Program, you must fulfill this requirement. For additional information, please contact the Boating Office at

Adult Rowing
Sign-up now for savings. Register for your rowing class (does not include Adult Learn to Row) at least two weeks prior to the start date of class and receive a 20% discount off of the class/program price listed online and in the brochure. Rowers 18 years and older are eligible to participate at the following three skill levels:
Beginners: Learn to Row is the beginning point for new rowers. Rowers will be in bigger boats and learn at a steady pace throughout the class; the next step is Intermediate Rowing and Sculling.
Intermediate: Intermediate Rowing and Sculling allows you to advance the skills you gained in Learn to Row, as well as row in a single scull by yourself.
Advanced: Open Rowing and Sculling focuses on rowing for fitness and technical growth with an option of racing at local and regional regattas. Students are ready for a higher level of rowing and may have some racing experience.
No classes will be held at the lake on Thursday, July 4 in observance of Independence Day.
Adult Learn to Row
Designed exclusively for first time rowers, this course introduces the basics of rowing, safety and boat-handling. Proper rowing technique and fitness development are stressed. The first class meets at the Kiwanis Recreation Center for the float test and safety video presentation. Attendance at the first three classes is mandatory. Fee: $120. 480-350-8069

Adult Intermediate Rowing and Sculling
Expand what you learned in Adult Learn to Row. Gain additional experience in shells and improve your fitness and technique. This class will also teach the skills required for sculling, which is rowing in a boat on your own. Prerequisite: Adult Learn to Row or commensurate experience. 480-350-8069

Adult Open Rowing and Sculling
This session brings experienced rowers together and is designed with athletes in mind. Sweep-rowers and scullers may try either discipline. Class utilizes cross-training, video analysis, and flexibility; and focuses on a high-level of rowing. Prerequisite: Intermediate Rowing and Sculling or commensurate experience. Erg Fitness
The instructor will help with basic technique and push you to dig deeper to reach new heights in your fitness progression. You are welcome to use your own boat for a paddling class, just be sure that you have a Town Lake Permit on your boat prior to class. For boat permit information visit our website at www.tempe.gov/boating.
Kayak Fitness
This is a perfect class for beginners and experienced kayakers alike. The program includes stretching, warm-up and on-the-water fitness exercises. There will be a focus on your forward paddle stroke and on-the-water training in kayaks. Kayak, PFD (Personal Floatation Device) and paddle are provided. Fee: $75. 480-350-8069

Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) Fitness
Once you have learned the basics of Stand-Up Paddling, stay in shape by taking SUP Fitness. This class will focus on paddling fitness and proper technique. Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) Yoga
Students will enjoy paddling on the lake, then anchoring boards and setting yoga breathing to begin. S.U.P. Yoga will feature seated and standing yoga postures, including sun salutations, lunges and downward-facing dog. We will take a few quiet meditation moments before paddling back. Tempe Town Lake Rowing and Paddling Club
This program is for advanced rowers and paddlers, allowing them to use equipment during non-program hours. Once joining the club, participants can check-out equipment during Club times and train. Coordinator permission and a successful re-entry test on file are pre-requisites. Rowing Club fee: $60/year and $20/month. Paddling Club fee: $40/year (April-October) and $20/month. Junior Recreational Rowing
