Arizona State Law has statutory requirements for adopting a General Plan that the City of Tempe and all Arizona cities must follow. The City of Tempe is following those requirements. Tempe also wishes to have substantial public input in this process and has a variety of ways to ensure the community has an opportunity to participate. The city also has created a Community Working Group to help residents have even more representation in the process.

The Approval Process
General Plan 2040 will be created in concert with public comments, the Community Working Group and City of Tempe staff. The process began in September 2012 and will conclude with vote by Tempe residents in May 2014.
Tempe residents who are registered to vote will have the opportunity to cast a ballot regarding General Plan 2040 in May 2014. If the plan is approved, it will be implemented after a 30 day appeal process.
