AWARDS CEREMONY HONORS LOCAL & STATEWIDE
PRESERVATION EFFORTS

The Tempe Historic Preservation Commission and Arizona Preservation Foundation hosted a joint awards ceremony this year on Friday, May 12, 2000. The event was sponsored by the Arizona Preservation Foundation, the Arizona State Parks Historic Preservation Office, the Arizona Archaeological Council, and the Tempe Historic Preservation Commission.

The ceremony was held at the Arizona Historical Society Museum, 1300 North College Avenue, in the host community of Tempe.  Following a reception, light buffet and museum gallery tours (including a special Doors to the Past exhibit), Tempe Mayor Neil Guiliano welcomed guests and honorees, and presented preservation awards.

The highlight of the Tempe Historic Preservation Awards Ceremony was the presentation of the Susan Harter Award. Susan Harter was a member of an early Tempe pioneer family, as well as a community and preservation leader.  This year's recipient was former Tempe Historic Preservation Commissioner Stan Patton.   Patton served two terms as Commissioner and is a contractor involved in preservation, including the current restoration of Arizona State University's Old Main.   Past recipients include Patricia Alexander, owner of the Farmer-Goodwin House, and Jenny Lucier for her preservation efforts in the Maple-Ash neighborhood.

The Arizona Heritage Preservation Awards will include a presentation of the award winners, highlighted by the Grand Award presentation.  This year's Grant Award recipient was the Hopi Foundation Training Program.
