Farmer-Goodwin as Bed & Breakfast
Re-roofing of the National Register listed
Farmer-Goodwin House has been completed. This project was assisted by a
preservation grant from the Arizona Heritage Fund. Re-plastering with an adobe-based
formula, has also been completed. The owners plan to open the home as a bed &
breakfast inn.
The
reconstruction of the 5,500 square foot
Ellingson Warehouse
(20 West Sixth Street) opened spring 2000 as Z'Tejas
Southwestern Grill. Reconstruction
included the
construction of a new frame, recalling the shape and structure of the original. Original brick, salvaged after the
1987 fire, was used to face
the building. The original building was constructed in
1909 on the northwest corner of Seventh Street and Maple Avenue. Throughout its life, the Ellingson
Warehouse has
served as an arsenal, a ceramic company, a freezer factory, and Hick's Machine Shop.

The National Register listed Charles
T. Hayden House (Monti's La Casa Vieja) has completed a window
rehabilitation project at the restaurant located on the southwest corner of Rio Salado
Parkway and Mill Avenue. Custom-made windows were placed where the original openings
in the walls existed. Portions of La Casa Vieja date back to 1873.
The project was assisted by a 1998 Arizona Heritage Grant.

lunch or dinner.
The rehabilitation of the National Register listed Elias-Rodriguez House
was
featured in an episode of "Restore America", on the Home
& Garden (HGTV)
cable television network . In addition, the Mexican-American experience in Tempe, as it relates to the built environment, was
also
discussed. The rehabilitation
project is assisted by a preservation grant from the Arizona Heritage Fund. The weekly half-hour "Restore America" series premiered Sunday
July 4th, and is hosted by Bob Vila. Each episode features one
state in the Union, with a special celebration culminating July 4th, 2000. The
Arizona
episode aired Sunday
July 18, 1999 at 10:00 p.m. (EST).
