HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE (HHW)

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) is any substance containing ingredients that have a reasonably anticipated outcome of negatively affecting your safety, health or the environment. Typically, HHW is identified with the signal words poison, danger, warning and caution.  HHW can include such products as wood stains, bleach, antifreeze, insecticides, paint, herbicides, drain cleaners and much more.

Other words on product labels give indications that the material is hazardous.  These include:

  • Toxic: can cause injury or death if swallowed, absorbed or inhaled

  • Reactive: A chemical that when combined with other substances can create a chemical reaction that results in a fire/explosion or production of hazardous gas/vapors.

  • Flammable: easily catches fire and tends to burn rapidly

  • Corrosive: a chemical or its vapors that can cause a material or living tissue to be destroyed

  • Explosive: violently bursting when exposed to pressure or heat

  • Irritant: causes soreness or swelling of the skin, eyes, mucous membranes or respiratory system

Hazardous waste disposed of improperly.
