Councilmember Onnie Shekerjian

Onnie Shekerjian was
elected to the Tempe City Council in May 2006.
Mrs. Shekerjian is the
Chair of the Education, Technology and Economic Development Committee.
She also serves on the City of Tempe Ad Hoc Long-Range Budget and Finance
Planning Committee, and on the Public Safety and Neighborhood Quality of Life
Committee. Onnie is also a member of the Central
City Development Committee of the Whole and Maricopa Association of
Government's Human Services Coordinating Committee.
Because they loved what the
city had to offer families, Mrs. Shekerjian and her husband, Brian, chose to
raise their three children in Tempe over 20 years ago.
In that time, Onnie has
acquired more than 19 years experience in public policy through volunteering on
over 65 boards, commissions and committees related to public education, youth /
family issues and the arts. She has served on the Tempe High School District’s
Harassment and Discrimination Independent Review Committee, the Kyrene
Elementary School District Governing Board, the KPNX Ch 12/ Arizona Republic
Local Schools Team, the Tribune’s Born to Learn Advisory Panel and as an
American Legion Auxiliary Arizona Girls State Counselor.
Additionally, she was a classroom volunteer for 17 years, an Art Masterpiece
Guide for nine years and served on school site councils for seven years.
Onnie was appointed to the Arizona State Board for Charter Schools and Arizona
Parents Commission on Drug Abuse Prevention and Education by Governor Jane D.
Hull where she served for five years and two years respectively.
Onnie’s great passion is making government work for people. She has authored
numerous articles on the subject of advocacy and education for both local and
national publications. In recognition of her work in advocacy, Onnie was a
finalist for the Arizona State University 2001 Community Fellows Program.
Beyond her extensive volunteerism, Onnie has worked as a research and advocacy
consultant for organizations, including Thomas B. Fordham Institute, Internet
Education Exchange, Morrison Institute for Public Policy at Arizona State
University and Arizona Community College Association.Note: All
