Hate Crimes
|
A "hate crime" is a crime committed because of the
victim's actual or perceived race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin,
disability, gender, or sexual orientation. The actions considered criminal are
using force or threat of force to willfully injure, intimidate, interfere with,
oppress, or threaten any other person in the free exercise or enjoyment of any
right or privilege secured to him or her by the Constitution or laws of the
State or country.
People who feel that they have been victims of a
hate crime should report the offense to the Tempe Police Department at
480-350-8311. Hate crimes also may be reported to the Arizona Attorney General's
Office-Civil Rights Intake Officer at 602-542-5263 (602-542-5002 TDD) or
toll-free at 1-877-491-5742.
