The Swimming Season is here…Drowning is one of the leading causes of death for children under the age of four in Arizona.

Drowning and Near Drowning can be prevented! The following safety tips are being provided by the Tempe Fire Prevention Department:

Never swim alone. Swim with a buddy.

Know your swimming limits and stay within them.

Never drink alcohol and swim.

Obey "No diving" signs.

Never leave a child unobserved around water. This includes supervising children while bathing. There is NO substitute for adult supervision.

Don’t prop pool gates open.

Keep furniture away from fence. A child could use it to climb over the fence.

Locate the nearest phone to the pool or better yet, keep a cordless phone nearby.

Don’t allow toys such as tricycles or wheel toys in the pool area. A child playing on these could accidentally fall into the water.

Teach family members good pool safety habits:

No pushing playmates

No jumping on others

No diving or jumping in shallow water.

Learn CPR and insist that babysitters, grandparents, and others who care for your child know CPR.
