Let's work together to reduce mail theft in the City of Tempe

THE UNITED STATES POSTAL INSPECTION SERVICE

offers the following tips to help prevent mail theft:

INSTALL A LOCKING MAILBOX:

These mailboxes allow for incoming mail to be inserted into an opening. The resident retains the key. You can purchase this type of mailbox at most home improvement stores.

PICK UP INCOMING MAIL PROMPTLY AFTER DELIVERY

    Never leave mail in your mailbox overnight.

DO NOT PLACE OUTGOING MAIL IN OR ON YOUR MAILBOX:

    Choose one of the following options:

      - Hand your mail to your mail carrier

      - Deposit your mail in a blue receptacle

      - Deposit your mail at a Post Office

BE SURE TO:

      - Avoid sending cash.

      - Inform correspondents of your correct address.

      - Use Registered Mail when sending valuables.

      - Ask you bank for secure checks, which resist alteration.

      - Notify USPS when going on vacation. Call 1-800-275-8777.

      - Watch for suspicious activity at mailboxes and record license plate numbers and descriptions.

      - Report theft as soon as possible.

MAIL THEFT REWARD

The United States Postal Inspection Service offers up to a $10,000 Reward for information and services leading to the arrest and conviction of any person for Mail Theft. Theft of mail, or even possession of stolen mail, is a Federal Felony and upon conviction each offense may be punishable by a fine up to $250,000 and imprisonment up to five years. (Title 18, United States Code, Section 1708)
