When renting a self storage unit, the most important concern of the renter is security. Security should always be at the forefront for self storage managers and property owners. To address crime problems at self storage facilities, there needs to be a coordinated effort of the self storage facility and your local police department.

The program utilizes a three phase process:

  • Rental agreement will provide a further guarantee. All renters must provide a photo i.d., agree to be fingerprinted, etc.

  • Working with the Police Department
  • Drug Activity
  • Fire Safety

The second phase involves implementation of security requirements that mangers/owners must meet prior to an inspection of their property by the Tempe Police Department.

A few of the significant requirements are:

  1. Adequate security lighting
  2. Access control
  3. "No Trespass" signs posted
  4. Property trimming of bushes and trees
  5. Property clean and free of debris
  6. Disc style locks and security stickers

Phase 3

The third phase requires renters to sign the Crime Free Drug Free Lease Addendum. Management must obtain renter identification and additional security measures will be recommended.

Management will be granted permission to display the Crime Free Mini-Storage sign on their property and utilize the logo for marketing purposes once all three phases are completed.
