Grease to Energy

Biodiesel
Tempe received $140,000 in Energy Efficiency & Conservation Block Grant funds from the U.S. Department of Energy grant to evaluate the feasibility of collecting both yellow grease (fryer oil) and brown (trap) grease and utilizing those resources to produce renewable energy - either biodiesel or methane gas.

The feasibility study is a cradle-to-grave look at securing necessary feedstock (fats-oils and grease), grease processing technologies, cogeneration technologies, the cost implications of different alternatives, and opportunities for public-private partnerships for both collection and energy generation. The study was completed in November 2011 and the City is working on a pilot project to collect fats, oils and grease from downtown Tempe restaurants.
