The Tempe Book Festival is an annual event intended to celebrate reading, writing, and a love for books. The festival brings together local authors, publishers, booksellers, panel discussions, youth story times and more!

Jana Bommersbach

One of the Grand Canyon State's most acclaimed journalists, Jana Bommersbach has been a fixture in Arizona media since the early 1970s, making her mark in both broadcast and print journalism. Her first book, The Trunk Murderess: Winnie Ruth Judd, was a national bestseller and was named Arizona's One Book AZ selection in 2010. A Squirrel's Tale is her first picture book. Jana Bommersbach

Bommersbach finds such joy in writing that she has tried every format: she's an investigative reporter and a magazine columnist; she's written non-fiction books and books of fiction; she's written an historical novel and a children's book. Jana shares some of her best--and worst--moments in writing in her "Joy of Writing" presentation. It's a romp through a writers mind.

SciFi

Join four Arizona science fiction and fantasy authors as they share their experiences with the writing process. Aspiring authors and fans alike should come prepared with questions or simply enjoy the discussion! Panelists include: K.B. (Keith) Shaw, David B. Riley, Jeffrey L. Kohanek, and Ryan Dalton.

Deborah J Ledford

Award-Winning author and film producer Deborah J. Ledford will discuss how to ramp up your written words to a more visual format, novels to screenplay formats, dos and don'ts to present the ideal script.
Bio:
Adjunct Professor for Arizona State University's Piper Writer Center for Creative Writing, Deborah J. Ledford is president, producer and screenwriter for the independent film and media company IOF Productions Ltd. and producer of the 2016 and 2014 Anthony Award Nominees for Best Audiobook Causing Chaos and Crescendo. She is an Edgar and Agatha Award Winner, and three-time nominee for the Pushcart Prize, and author of the Inola Walela and Steven Hawk suspense series, including: Causing Chaos, Crescendo, Staccato and the Hillerman Sky Award Finalist, Snare.

Join six Arizonan authors as they share their experience with the writing and publishing process. Aspiring authors and fans alike should come prepared with questions or simply enjoy the discussion! Panelists include: Hal C. F. Astell, Richard Draude, Paul Mosier, and Shannon Baker.

Rosemarie Dombrowski

Poetry workshop presented by City of Phoenix Poet Laureate Rosemarie Dombrowski. Drawing heavily from the tools of poetry, this creative non-fiction workshop will focus on brevity and concision, i.e. the art of writing flash, which is not only the stand-alone genre of the moment, but can also serve as the building blocks for everything from essays to full-length memoirs. The session will conclude with an overview of several “take-home assignments” spanning an array of approaches and techniques, as well as a flash reading guide (which will be distributed as a handout). 

Teen Panel

Abigail Johnson (If I Fix You; The First To Know), Kate Watson (Seeking Mansfield, Welcome Home: An Anthology on Love and Adoption), and Stephanie Elliot (Sad Perfect) share their tips, tricks, and insights about writing.

Childrens Panel

Join five Arizona children’s authors as they share their experience with the writing and publishing process. Aspiring authors and fans alike should come prepared with questions or simply enjoy the discussion! Panelists include: Adam Baker, Terri Mainwaring, Linda Radke, Tanja Bauerle (SCBWI), and Michael Hale (SCBWI).

Join Arizonan authors as they share their experience with the marketing process. Aspiring authors and fans alike should come prepared with questions or simply enjoy the discussion! Panelists include: Ann Videan, Laura Orsini (Phoenix Publishing), Saturn's Moon Press, Leah Downing, and Patricia L. Brooks (Brooks Goldmann Publishing and Scottsdale Society of Women Writers).

Go Dog Go

Founded in 1977, Childsplay is a nationally and internationally respected professional theatre company whose chosen audience is children. The have partnered with Tempe Center for the Arts as a venue for showcasing their performances for school children and families. The 2017-18 season's theme is storybooks; all productions will be adapted from beloved children's classics and contemporary works.

Tempe Book Festival - 2016

Registration for booth space or to present at the 2017 Tempe Book Festival is now full.

If you are a publisher, bookseller, author, or illustrator interested in being placed on the 2017 wait list:

The event will be held outdoors in the Library Plaza.  All exhibitors are required to supply their own tables, chairs and optional canopy.  The library will supply a 10’ x 10’ space to each exhibitor. Before applying, please take a moment to view our Participant Criteria & Guidelines.
