The Crime Analysis Unit is currently seeking interns for
Spring 2007. Internships in the Crime Analysis Unit, which are available every
semester, give students the opportunity to conduct tactical crime analysis for the Tempe
Police Department. Interns assist the unit in the suppression and prevention of criminal
activity by:

- Using a tactical analysis software program to enter data and identify crime trends,
patterns, series, sprees, hotspots, and suspicious persons
- Matching offender traits to modus operandi characteristics
- Using mapping software for automated crime mapping
- Interacting with patrol officers and detectives to learn about ongoing crime patterns
- Conducting site visits
- Publishing crime bulletins
Interns will gain proficiency in various computer
programs including:
- A.T.A.C. (Automated Tactical Analysis of Crime) ©
- Word ©
- Outlook ©
- MapInfo ©
- Paint Shop Pro ©
- Other software programs specific to the Tempe Police Department
Interns will also have the opportunity to:
- Conduct ride-a-longs with 911/Dispatch and a patrol officer
- Attend quarterly meetings of the
Arizona Association of
Crime Analysts (A.A.C.A.) to share information, obtain training, and network with
other crime analysis professionals
- Interview a member of the Tempe Police Department
This internship provides an excellent opportunity to gain experience in the criminal
justice field. Several past crime analysis interns/assistants have received full-time
positions in the justice field as crime analysts, police officers, software developers, an
auditor, and a loss prevention supervisor.

Applicants should be upper-division college students with an interest in the
criminal justice field, crime analysis, or computerized mapping. Those interviewed have
come from Justice Studies, Sociology, Political Science, Geography, and Computer Science.
Compensation
(Back to

This is an unpaid internship; however, interns receive college credit upon
completion of the internship. The number of credits available usually depends on the
amount your school will authorize. However, because this is an intensive internship, the
Crime Analysis Unit will typically require students to complete 5 or 6 credits over the
course of the semester, which falls between 225 and 260 hours.
Schedule
(Back to
Top)
To fulfill the internship credit requirement, the schedule for the
Spring
semester is approximately 16 hours a week (4 days, 4 hours a day) and 20 hours a week (4
days, 5 hours a day) during the summer. The specific days and times are negotiable.
Location
(Back to

Interns work at the North Police Station, located at 120 E. 5th St.,
which is a short distance from the Arizona State University campus.
Application Process
(Back to

The application submissions and interviews are conducted each semester. Since this
internship deals with confidential information, all applicants are required to pass a
background check and polygraph examination.
Tempe crime analysts are present at every Justice Studies Internship Fair,
typically held in the Memorial Union on the Arizona State University campus every March
and October. For the date and time of the next internship fair, contact the academic
advisement staff in the School of Justice Studies at (480) 965-7727.
The CAU also recruits students from departments other
than Justice Studies. If you are Sociology, Political Science, or other Social
Science majors, please contact your department for internship information. We are
willing to work with all departments.
To request a copy of the internship application and a list of the disqualifiers,
contact the Crime Analysis Unit at (480) 350-8483 or click here to email
Matt D'Anna . It will also be necessary to
speak with your college counselor regarding credit options.
