The Crime Analysis Unit is currently seeking interns for Spring 2007. Internships in the Crime Analysis Unit, which are available every semester, give students the opportunity to conduct tactical crime analysis for the Tempe Police Department. Interns assist the unit in the suppression and prevention of criminal activity by:

  • Reading police reports and field interview cards
  • Using a tactical analysis software program to enter data and identify crime trends, patterns, series, sprees, hotspots, and suspicious persons
  • Matching offender traits to modus operandi characteristics
  • Using mapping software for automated crime mapping
  • Interacting with patrol officers and detectives to learn about ongoing crime patterns
  • Conducting site visits
  • Publishing crime bulletins

Interns will gain proficiency in various computer programs including:

  • A.T.A.C. (Automated Tactical Analysis of Crime) ©
  • Word ©
  • Outlook ©
  • MapInfo ©
  • Paint Shop Pro ©
  • Other software programs specific to the Tempe Police Department

This internship provides an excellent opportunity to gain experience in the criminal justice field. Several past crime analysis interns/assistants have received full-time positions in the justice field as crime analysts, police officers, software developers, an auditor, and a loss prevention supervisor.

Applicants should be upper-division college students with an interest in the criminal justice field, crime analysis, or computerized mapping. Those interviewed have come from Justice Studies, Sociology, Political Science, Geography, and Computer Science.

Compensation

This is an unpaid internship; however, interns receive college credit upon completion of the internship. The number of credits available usually depends on the amount your school will authorize. However, because this is an intensive internship, the Crime Analysis Unit will typically require students to complete 5 or 6 credits over the course of the semester, which falls between 225 and 260 hours.

To fulfill the internship credit requirement, the schedule for the Spring semester is approximately 16 hours a week (4 days, 4 hours a day) and 20 hours a week (4 days, 5 hours a day) during the summer. The specific days and times are negotiable.

Interns work at the North Police Station, located at 120 E. 5th St., which is a short distance from the Arizona State University campus.

The application submissions and interviews are conducted each semester. Since this internship deals with confidential information, all applicants are required to pass a background check and polygraph examination.

Tempe crime analysts are present at every Justice Studies Internship Fair, typically held in the Memorial Union on the Arizona State University campus every March and October. For the date and time of the next internship fair, contact the academic advisement staff in the School of Justice Studies at (480) 965-7727.

The CAU also recruits students from departments other than Justice Studies. If you are Sociology, Political Science, or other Social Science majors, please contact your department for internship information.  We are willing to work with all departments.
