Tempe ranks among the top
performers nationally as the best place to start a new technology company.
To help give innovative companies the best possible start, ASU created
Technopolis, an academy geared toward coaching entrepreneurs in the
intricasies of business and to encourage faster, more successful technology
transfer from the university environment to the end user.
The program is working. More
than 150 technology and life science entrepreneurs succeeded in their
Technopolis training, with 18 graduates forming companies. About 90 percent
of the other program participants are planning to bring innovative products
to the marketplace.
Technopolis programs include:
-
Launch Pad -- Entrepreneurs learn how to
develop a business concept and strategy for their products through one on
one coaching by seasoned tech industry CEOs in this 10-week course
-
Technology and Life Science
Entrepreneurship -- A six-week course to study the major concepts of
technology entrepreneurship
-
In-depth community workshops --
Entrepreneurs learn how to find federal funding and angel financing for
the early stages of their product development
The City of Tempe is a proud sponsor of
Technopolis, and supports the program and its graduates.
Preparing students for a future in
technology-focused business is also important. ASU created a series of
other classes designed to develop business skills for these future
entrepreneurs. Some of these programs include:
-
The Citizen Scientist -- a one semester
course in which students interact with both Fortune 500 and fledgling
businesses to learn how PhD level science and engineering works in the
corporate environment.
-
WP Carey MBA Technology Program -- Aimed
at professionals in technology-oriented firms, students achieving this
degree develop business plans around an original product then develop
their concepts with leaders in the business community.
-
WP Carey Management Courses -- Several
business management courses within the business school focus on technology
and venture design.
