Tempe Town Lake Junior Rowing

Tempe Town Lake Junior rowing team is a composite rowing team that practices on Tempe Town Lake. We accept athletes ages 13-18 and from school all around the valley. We are a competitive team that trains five days a week in preparation for races around the country. We are offering a Learn to Row class before the season starts for those who are interested in joining the team but have not rowed before. To join the team it is not required to take the Learn to Row session. We are always looking for new members to our team so come down to the lake and join one of the fastest growing sports in the country!

Tempe Town Lake Junior Rowing Team-480-350-8069-Join the junior team and develop your rowing skills in a team sport environment. The novice year focuses on learning the rowing stroke and rowing fitness and will be eligible for our local race in October. The varsity rowers will fine tune their skills and prepare for races around the country. Float Test* will be held on 6/2 at a local pool for all first timers. Call to inquire about rolling enrollment.

Adult Rowing **Check out our new class format!!**

Adult Rowing encompasses anyone who is 18 years old or older. Whether you are an accomplished competitive rower or if you have never seen a rowing shell before, we have a class for you.  

·        Beginners will take the Learn to Row 1 course to get introduced to the very basics of rowing. Learn to Row 2 will allow you to improve your newfound skills (or remember your old rowing skills!) and prepare to join the Open Row Program.

·        Open rowing focuses on the enjoyment of rowing a shell and getting a great workout in the process. There is an option of racing at local regattas with these classes.

·        Competitive Rowing is for those who have had one or more years of rowing experience and some racing experience. This group focuses on competitive rowing and competing in local regattas.

Summer 2008

Learn to Row 1-Always wanted to try rowing? This class is for you! Designed exclusively for first time rowers, this course will lead you through the basics of the sport of rowing. Safety, boat handling, proper rowing technique and initial fitness development are stressed. Participants must be able to pass the 10 minute float test* and have a basic level of fitness. The first class will meet at a local pool for the float test and safety video presentation. **Attendance of the first three classes is mandatory.**

Learn to Row 2-Your next step in rowing! This class will build on the skills you learned in LTR 1 in order to row or cox in an 8 or 4 person shell. Focus on developing rowing skills, fitness and confidence to progress to Open Row. Prerequisite is LTR 1.   Fee:$115

***New Class***Open Sculling-Need some extra time in a shell? Want to have some time to row away life’s distractions? Then come on down to Open Sculling. This class offers participants time on the water to row as they please. Limited coaching. Prerequisite: Sculling 1. Fee: $80.

Open Row -Completed Learn to Row 1 & 2 and you want more? Join rowers like yourself and continue the learning process. This follow-up class to LTR 2 places even more emphasis on skill building and fitness development. Local race participation is an option with this class. Adult Competitive Rowing Program- This course is designed with the serious competitive athlete in mind. Rowers are taught racing techniques, strategy and boat speed development. This class will be building toward a competitive national racing schedule.
Prerequisite: One year plus rowing experience, with some racing experience. Fee:$180

Sculling 1-This Class will teach the student the skills required to row a single, double and quad. It is designed for people with no sculling experience. Prerequisite: Learn to Row 2.  Fee:$115

Sculling 2-This class is designed for students who have already taken one session of Sculling 1. There will be continued focus on technique and students will be introduced to more advanced boats.  Prerequisite: One Session Sculling 1. Fee:$115

Sculling 3-This class is designed for those wishing further development of their sculling skills. There will be some emphasis placed on boat speed and competitive training. There is an option to participate in local and regional races with this class. This class is repeatable.  Prerequisite: Instructor Approval. Fee:$110

Erg Fitness-Pilates has nothing on this! Come join this high energy class with an interactive instructor who will lead you through the workout and hop off the erg to work with you on technique too! While there will be mixed experience levels in the class, the workouts will be tailored to the individual. Prerequisite: Learn To Row 2 Fee:$55

Moon Light Kayak Float- Ever paddled by the light of the moon?  Now you can with on Tempe Town Lake. We’ll fit boats, grab paddles and wear life jackets to launch under the full moon.  Prior experience is not necessary.  Bring your swim suit, towel and dry clothes and prepare to howl at the moon. Kayaks, equipment, and PFDs will be provided. Must be 18 years or older to participate.  Fee: $30 if you need a boat, $20.00 if you bring your own boat. To register go to www.tempe.gov/brochure

Beginning River Kayaking- 480-350-8069- Ever wanted to learn how to roll a kayak? Arizona Canoe and Kayak classes are designed for beginners interested in learning how to paddle and roll kayaks. This 16 hour class teaches you how to fit and select gear, basic strokes, wet exits , bow rescues, Eskimo rolls, and boat handling techniques in preparation for white water or sea kayaking. Bring your swimsuit and towel and be prepared to have fun! Kayaks, equipment, and PFDs provided. Fee: $190
