Public
art projects in Tempe develop as the community grows and city
construction is implemented. City projects are funded with
city capital improvement funds, and have resulted in transit shelters
that provide an artful wait for the bus or playful places to park a
bike. A series of bus wraps, designed by poets and artists, formerly
were seen along the city’s roads, and temporary projects, such as
artist-designed library cards, add variety to the city’s art
collection. Tempe has also commissioned art at city parks, fire
stations, City Hall and the public library, which round out the
city’s art locations.
The
projects at Tempe Town Lake and the downtown areas provide
outstanding tours in themselves. During a walk around the Town Lake,
visitors can view pieces that illustrate how water issues and nature
are addressed in the desert. A trip downtown showcases an abundance
of artwork in both the public and privately-owned courtyards and
plazas. Many pieces are interactive, provide shade or incorporate
water to mediate the warm Arizona temperatures.
