Description:
Plants native to
Arizona work as a basis for the design of this entryway. Desert
landscaping echoes the motifs of the wall. Pieces of ceramic tile
and glass are embedded into what has been called chunky clay that is
then covered with Dryvit, a latex-based stucco system.
Funding:
This project was funded by the individual developer as a requirement
of Tempe's Art in Private Development Ordinance.
Artist
biography: Susan

of Fine Arts Degree in Ceramics. Her undergraduate work was at the
New York
State College of Ceramics at Alfred University with its emphasis on
the study of ceramics and glass. She also studied at the renowned
Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, Mont. She was on the Arizona
Commission on the Arts Artist Roster and is responsible for several

Main Library in Mesa.
Artist’s
process: Susan
Furini often emphasizes repetition in her work. She takes advantage
of the elastic properties of Dryvit which forms a stucco-like shell
on this piece. Ceramic pieces along with glass are embedded in what
has been described as chunky clay. Open spaces also play a role in
the work. Furini has described an influence from Picasso that can be
seen in cubist elements of her work. |
