Deborah Salac-Ashforth received a Master of
Fine Arts degree from Concordia University in Montreal, Canada.
She is a member of the
Arizona Commission on the Arts Artist Roster and lives in Arizona. She has exhibited in
numerous solo and group shows worldwide and has been the recipient of a number of
awards and scholarships. Salac-Ashforth works primarily with cloth and
clothing. Her work explores the use of clothing as a site of negotiation
between the public and private self, as a signifier of ascribed and
claimed identities. Although she is often distracted.
Kelly Barrett describes her work as
"an act of
excavation, in search of a self, long ago buried and bound in a tightly
wound cocoon of foreign ideals and expectations."
"The
creative process is the tool I use to unravel the fibers and filaments and
expose the original fabric of my spirit. I incorporate a variety of
textures, objects, and imagery that portray an unconscious and intuitive
world encased in layers of encaustic paint medium on wood panels. As a
mixed media artist, I am not wed to any one medium or technique, but
instead use a wide array to communicate. I’m attracted to very tactile
materials such as plaster, wax, organic elements and industrial objects. I
combine these to create a narrative using techniques from various
disciplines including photography, painting, digital media, sculpture, and
performance art," she said.
