Description:
The mural is a series of bronze bands, which are set into the
passageway sidewalk between the fire station and the parking
structure. These bands contain collage images that represent the
history and character of the fire department. LeFevre did extensive
historical research on the fire department and the majority of the
imagery is a reflection of this history.
Funding:
This project was funded through city of Tempe Capital Improvement
Project Percent for the Art funds.
Artist biography:
Gregg LeFevre lives in New York. His commissioned works include
public art for New York City, Miami, Chicago, Boston and a number of
other American cities. He has received grants from the Brown Fund,
the National Endowment for the Arts and is a recipient of the
Coleman Award. LeFevre has also received an award for excellence
from the Arts Commission of the City of New York.
Artist statement:
I have created more than 50 site-specific public art works, which
provide insight about the nature and character of particular places.
I often illustrate in relief or with paving materials the traits
that contribute to the unique personality of a place. The history of
an area, its cultural and architectural landmarks, ethnic heritage,
even its popular myths and local humor are rendered in relief or
with color. My works can be found underfoot in all types of
pedestrian spaces from plazas, parks, bike paths and trails to
lobbies and arcades.
The Tempe public art program is managed by city
of Tempe Cultural Services staff with input from the Tempe
Municipal Arts Commission, a 15-member, mayor-appointed advisory
board.
