Artist biography: Meiny Vermaas-van der Heide's work reflects her combined American and Dutch heritage. Her techniques are born of traditional American patchwork and her inspiration comes from Dutch painters Piet Mondrian and Vincent Van Gogh, and from the color of tulips and other flowers of Holland. Vermaas-van der Heide’s quilts are known internationally for their strong graph, minimalist appeal and the ‘color magic’ of visual illusions. Her widely published works have been shown in numerous exhibitions throughout the United States and Europe: Needle Expressions ’92, Visions ’92 and ’94, Europa Quilts ’93, Quilt National ’93, Art Quilt International ’94, the Art Quilt ‘94/’95, The Artist as Quiltmaker  ’92 and ’96, Paper/Fiber’92, as well as in many publications. She was the featured artist at the First European Quilt Fair. Vermaas-van der Heide, a professionally trained teacher, also has written about her work in many well-recognized publications. She has been teaching quilt making since 1992. She has taught in the U.S. and in Europe, including workshops at the International Quilt Festival in Houston and the New York Quilt Festival.

Artist statement: Earth Quilts are my silent voice joining the choir of women worldwide, using the universal language of love and the beauty of patchwork. While expressing a heartfelt desire for peace, social and environmental justice, shared globally.
