Cynthia Baker, violin; Abra Comitz, gamba; Jodi Buckles, recorder; and Janet Green, krummhorn perform Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque music evoking the spirit and pageantry of an age 500 years before Bach. David Spade, Emmy and Golden Globe nominated comedian and star of the CBS sitcom “Rules of Engagement,” will entertain as part of the 3rd Annual Friends of TCA gala. The evening includes an elegant reception, sit-down dinner and jazz with the Bob Ravenscroft Trio. Information: 480-350-2884.

Many jazz critics believe Benny Green, next to the late Oscar Peterson, is the world's finest jazz pianist. From 1997 on, Benny led his own trios and concentrated on his solo piano performances. This pageant, formerly the Worldwide Pageant, is dedicated to the philosophy that everyone has his or hew own sense of style and beauty. It is a "personal-style" and "achievement" competition that celebrates unique and special qualities.

The KAT Trio will perform unique arrangements for piano, violin and clarinet. All three of these popular performers are in the Arizona State University School of Music doctoral program. This retelling of the Biblical story of Noah and the Ark features songs by Richard Rogers. Noah, ridiculed by his family and community, finds that building the ark was only the first of many daunting challenges. His journey is hilarious, tender and inspirational. 

The discovery of a rare Honus Wagner baseball card presents 12-year-old Joe Stoshack with a moral dilemma and a magical opportunity to gain confidence and determination from one of baseball's finest.

Lumilius “Miloy” Cañete is a native of the Philippines and a doctoral student at the ASU School of Music. He will perform works by Beethoven, Scarlatti and Chopin. Two of Cañete’s piano students will perform Beethoven, Scarlatti and Haydn. Optional gallery and facility tours follow. Free.

Smitha Ramkrishna performs an Indian Classical Dance depicting intricate footwork and hand gestures. The dances are built around the stories of gods from the Indian mythology. Ramkrishna is an environmental activist and has won numerous awards for humanitarian work.

Harpist Lynne Aspnes, associate dean at ASU's Herberger School of Music, joins Atlanta Symphony violinist and Assistant Concertmaster, Justin Bruns. Aspnes has recorded on the Collins Classics, CRI, ProArte, RCA Red Seal, Virgin Classics and Pro Organo labels.                                       Buy Tickets

 

Artists in the “Read Me a Picture: Arizona Children’s Book Illustrators” exhibition will present a panel discussion of their work. Coffee is provided. Free. Seating may be limited, call 480-350-5679 for information.

Nick Alvarez, cello, and Keith Kirchoff, piano, will perform diverse virtuosic works, spanning Bach to the contemporary composer Leo Ornstein, one of the most remarkable talents of the early 20th Century. Michael Kocour and jazz students from Arizona State University will perform. Kocour is associate professor and director of Jazz Studies at the ASU. Kocour is an acclaimed jazz pianist who has performed around the world. Optional gallery and facility tours follow. Free
