The men and women of the Tempe Police Department Patrol Division have the primary responsibility for responding to calls for service and providing quality basic police services.  Patrol provides first response to all calls for service and emergencies.

Employees of the Patrol Division conduct criminal investigations, enforce state and local laws, and work with the community on a myriad of public safety issues.  Patrol officers also write reports, testify in court and are proficient in crime prevention and crime reduction strategies. The Patrol Division is the most visible section of the police department, providing around the clock service to citizens and visitors of Tempe.  For the purposes of command, control and resource allocation, the City of Tempe is divided into three patrol districts - North, Central and South.

  • The ACTION TEAM
One of the best ways the Patrol Operations Division can impact crime is through the use of the ACTION Team, developed in 2001.  This acronym stands for Attacking Crime Trends In Our Neighborhoods.  The team brings a new element of community policing to the Police Department and they have proven themselves to be a very important resource in solving specific crime trends. The ACTION Team is a squad comprised of one (1) Sergeant and six (6) Officers.

The Canine Unit utilizes the German Shepherd due to its social personality and commitment to work. All of the canine teams are highly trained and have a high level of commitment to search for and safely take into custody those suspects who choose to commit crimes in the City of Tempe.  The Canine Unit is comprised of one (1) Sergeant and four (4) Officers and their canines.

  • Community Service Officers (CSOs)
CSOs are specially trained civilian employees who assist patrol officers by conducting basic investigations, writing criminal reports, investigating accidents, and assisting with many other calls which allows officers to remain available for higher priority calls for service.  There are ten (10) CSOs assigned to the Patrol Division.

  • Administrative Assistants
The Administrative Assistants of the Patrol Operations Division provide a wide variety of clerical work including filing, billing, verifying and records keeping.  Administrative Assistants are also responsible for compiling and organizing data and background materials and preparing a variety of statistical, financial, operational and special project reports.  There are seven (7) Administrative Assistants assigned to the Patrol Operations Division.
