The men and women of the Tempe Police Department
Patrol Division have the primary responsibility for responding to calls for
service and providing quality basic police services. Patrol provides first
response to all calls for service and emergencies.
Employees of the Patrol Division conduct criminal
investigations, enforce state and local laws, and work with the community on a
myriad of public safety issues. Patrol officers also write reports,
testify in court and are proficient in crime prevention and crime reduction
strategies. The Patrol Division is the most visible section of the police
department, providing around the clock service to citizens and visitors of
Tempe. For the purposes of command, control and resource allocation,
the City of Tempe is divided into three patrol districts - North, Central and
South.

The ACTION TEAM
One of the best ways the
Patrol Operations Division can impact crime is through the use of the ACTION
Team, developed in 2001. This acronym stands for Attacking Crime Trends In Our
Neighborhoods. The team brings a new element of community
policing to the Police Department and they have proven themselves to be a very
important resource in solving specific crime trends. The ACTION Team is a
squad comprised of one (1) Sergeant and six (6) Officers.

The Canine Unit
The Patrol Division Canine Unit’s main purpose is to protect the citizens of
Tempe and Tempe police officers by locating and apprehending dangerous
criminals that commit crimes against citizens living in or visiting our
city. The Canine Unit utilizes the German Shepherd due to its social
personality and commitment to work. All of the canine teams are highly
trained and have a high level of commitment to search for and safely take
into custody those suspects who choose to commit crimes in the City of
Tempe. The Canine Unit is comprised of one (1) Sergeant and four (4)
Officers and their canines.

Community Service
Officers (CSOs)
CSOs are specially
trained civilian employees who assist patrol officers by conducting basic
investigations, writing criminal reports, investigating accidents, and assisting
with many other calls which allows officers to remain available for higher
priority calls for service. There are ten (10) CSOs assigned to the Patrol
Division.

Administrative Assistants The Administrative Assistants of the Patrol
Operations Division provide a wide variety of clerical work including
filing, billing, verifying and records keeping. Administrative
Assistants are also responsible for compiling and organizing data and
background materials and preparing a variety of statistical, financial,
operational and special project reports. There are seven (7)
Administrative Assistants assigned to the Patrol Operations Division.

Service
Aides The Patrol Service Aides are extremely crucial in the day to
day operation of the Patrol Operations Division. They are responsible
for coordination of the repair and maintenance of the patrol vehicle fleet
as well an ensuring proper equipment and forms are available to the patrol
officers. In addition, the Service Aides are also charged with
transporting interoffice mail between all police facilities within the City
of Tempe. There are two (2) Service Aides assigned to the Patrol
Operations Division.
