ARSON
Definition
of Arson:
The
willful or malicious burning of property (as a building) especially with
criminal or fraudulent intent.
The
Tempe
Investigations Bureau conducts investigations into fire and explosive incidents
that are reported to the department. When
a fire or explosive incident is reported to the Department, a detective is sent
to the scene. The Detective Supervisor will make a response decision based on
facts given him by the on scene detective and other emergency responders at the
scene.
Detectives who have received specialized training in fire and
explosive investigation will handle the investigation. The Detective assigned
this duty conducts an investigation to determine if there has been a violation
of the law and brings charges against the person(s) who committed the crime.
Detectives
work closely with the City of
Tempe Fire
Department
and
the
Maricopa
County
Crime Lab.
Detective's
who are assigned fire and explosive investigations are sent to schools for
additional training in these types of investigations. As these cases may be used
to cover-up another crime, they also are knowledgeable in everything from
burglary investigations to murder investigations. Detectives assigned to the
Arson Unit will work all types of crimes.
Although
the dollar loss to fire can be huge, the families who lose their homes suffer a
loss that can not be measured in dollars. The Detectives who work Arson
Investigation try to answer questions in these investigations for the families
involved and bring to trial those who commit arson in our city.
