Welcome to the Tempe Police Department Criminal Investigations webpage.

If an investigation can not be completed by the initial investigating Patrol Officer it will be forwarded to the appropriate investigations bureau for follow up.  Certain investigations maybe forwarded to our Crime Prevention Unit, Gang Unit, Narcotic Unit, Street Crimes Unit or other specialty units.  The remaining cases are generally assigned in one of four categories:

  • Persons - Persons Detectives conduct investigations such as Aggravated Assault, Homicide, Missing Persons, Robbery, Sex Crimes, Sex Offender Notification.  In 2005, Persons Detectives investigated 1,185 persons crimes and cleared 68% of their cases.
     
  • Property -  Property Detectives conduct investigations such as Arson, Auto Theft, Burglary, Checks & Frauds, Pawn, Shoplifting.  In 2005, Property Detectives investigated 1,986 property crimes and cleared 60% of their cases. 
     
  • Juvenile - Juvenile Detectives work with high schools and middle schools to provide education and law enforcement support to create a safe environment necessary to the learning process.  Generally cases involving a juvenile attending high school or middle school in Tempe will be assigned to a Juvenile Detective.  Juvenile Unit detectives investigated a total of 510 cases, and cleared 76% of their cases in 2005.
     
  • Night Squad -  Night Detectives provide support and investigative expertise to patrol officers on night shifts.  Night Detectives are also assigned follow up investigation on Domestic Violence related incidents, harassment, threats and misdemeanor assaults.  In 2005, Night Detectives investigated 1170 cases and cleared 63%.
